October 1st marks Alberta Public Libraries Day of Action, a province-wide initiative bringing together public libraries across Alberta to celebrate our collective impact and dedicate meaningful time to important ongoing work.

As members of the Greater Edmonton Library Association, we recognize public libraries as essential community infrastructure. Our institutions serve as trusted spaces that support literacy, lifelong learning, digital access, creativity, and connection. Every day, libraries help Albertans learn, grow, and thrive.
On October 1—which also kicks off Canadian Library Month—libraries across the province are coming together to:
- Celebrate the value of public libraries and the people they serve
- Plan and prepare for implementation of changes to Alberta’s Libraries Regulation
- Strengthen policies, support staff training, and ensure we meet legislative requirements
- Reaffirm our commitment to intellectual freedom, accessibility, and inclusive service
This Day of Action represents a positive, collaborative initiative. Libraries remain dedicated to serving their communities while adapting to evolving provincial requirements. By working together, we ensure public libraries continue to be welcoming, responsive institutions that contribute to educational success, economic opportunity, digital inclusion, and community wellbeing across Alberta.
