GELA Prison Libraries Project

Founded in 2007, the GELA Prison Libraries Project is a group of volunteers who provide library resources and programs to correctional facilities located in the Edmonton area, including the Edmonton Institution for Women, the Edmonton Institution, and the Edmonton Remand Centre.

Our work includes:

  • Collection building
  • Book clubs
  • Writing Clubs
  • Resume Workshops
  • A storybook project (incarcerated participants record themselves reading aloud and recordings are sent to children in their families)
  • A book borrowing project that provides access to materials from the Edmonton Public Library

UPDATE: Due to the pandemic, the majority of institutions are not currently allowing volunteers to visit. However, if you are interested in volunteering for the project once we are able, please contact us at gelaprisonproject@gmail.com, and we will be in contact to discuss volunteer openings.
