We would like to invite you all to a GELA BBQ potluck. We will provide the hot dogs (veggie and meat) with all the trimmings and water. We are asking participants to bring a side dish to share.

GELA and LISAA Resume Workshop

The Greater Edmonton Library Association (GELA) and the University of Alberta Library Information Studies Alumni Association (LISAA) will be offering a Resume Workshop. LISAA and GELA wish to assist local students, new graduates, and professionals looking to improve their resumes.

Where: MacEwan University, Building 5, Room 5-323 (campus map)

Date: April 19, 2018

Time: 6:00pm to 8:00pm

Food: Light refreshments will be provided.

To attend this resume-focused evening, please complete the RSVP form by Wednesday April 11th.

Workshop attendees will rotate between three optional stations:

  • Have your resume reviewed by an experienced professional

    • Note: We recommend you submit your resume in advance via the RSVP form in order to make the most of your review session. Bringing a paper copy to the workshop is also encouraged.

  • Engage in resume peer review with other attendees

  • Review resume tips and materials

We are also looking for additional resume reviewers. We welcome resume reviewers of all experience levels, though hiring experience is recommended. To volunteer as a resume reviewer, please complete the RSVP form by Wednesday April 6th.

No GELA or LISAA membership is required to participate.

This will be a general orientation to:

  • GELA’s history
  • ethos / ethics of the project
  • current and proposed programs
  • discussion of skills we need
  • discussion of where we can welcome volunteers right now

*Note: we will hold this orientation once every 2 months. If we don’t receive an RSVP for April 10, by at least one potential volunteer, we will cancel, and instead wait for another 2 months for the next. Please confirm with us if you plan to attend.

If you have just started volunteering, you are still welcome to come; this session will hopefully give you some context of how we work and how we hope to sustain and grow this work.

Call for GELA Executive Nominations

If you’re excited about the Greater Edmonton library community and would like to contribute to it, the Greater Edmonton Library Association (GELA) is seeking nominations for the following executive positions:

  • Vice-President/President Elect/Past President (3 year commitment)
  • Secretary (2 year commitment)
  • Program Councillor (2 year commitment)
  • Student Representative from U of A SLIS (1 year commitment) (2 positions)
  • Student Representative from MacEwan University LIT program (1 year commitment)

Descriptions of the positions can be found in the GELA handbook.

We encourage you to nominate yourself as a candidate for any of these positions. To do so, please send an email to the chair of the Nominating Committee, Jodi Lommer(jodil@nait.ca), indicating your position of interest. Please include a short bio (max 200 words) with your email.

The deadline for nominations is Friday, April 6th. Nominations received after April 6th will be added to the ballot as nominations from the floor.

We’re also recruiting for the appointed position of GELA Treasurer. If you’re interested in putting your name forward for consideration by the current GELA executive, please email Jodi Lommer (jodil@nait.ca).

The election for the Executive positions will be held at the GELA AGM on April 24th. The student representatives and the treasurer will be chosen by the current Executive prior to the AGM.

The Greater Edmonton Library Association (GELA) has the great pleasure of inviting you to attend a panel discussion on Library and Information Professionals Abroad. Panelists will be answering questions and sharing their experiences on travelling to international institutions and/or moving to Canada to work from another country.

GELA Speed Networking

The Greater Edmonton Library Association (GELA) invites students, new graduates, and other interested community members to participate in our first Speed Networking event.

Attendees will mix and mingle with invited library and information professionals. Consider it an opportunity to ask experienced professionals about their daily work, their professional interests and priorities, or their career paths. You might discover aspects of the library and information field you’d never considered! The invited professionals come from public libraries, academic libraries, special libraries and more.

DATE: Tuesday November 7, 2017

TIME: 6:00pm-8:00pm

LOCATION: Program Room, EPL Strathcona Branch (8331 104 St NW).

FOOD: Light refreshments will be provided.

We have space for up to 30 participants. There will be 5 attendees at each table who will then rotate (speed-dating style) between the invited professionals.

If you’d like to attend please submit the RSVP form by Friday November 3, 2017.

No GELA membership is required to participate, although joining GELA is always encouraged.
