About the Project

Founded in 2007, the GELA Prison Subcommittee is a group of over twenty volunteers who provide library resources and programs in correctional facilities located in the Edmonton area. These include the Edmonton Institution for Women, the Edmonton Remand Centre, and the Edmonton Institution.

Our work has included:

Edmonton Institution for Women

  • inmate book clubs (dedicated to adult literature and young adult fiction)
  • a storybook project (where inmates record themselves reading aloud, and their recording is sent to children in their families)
  • book borrowing project that allows inmates to access materials from Edmonton Public Library
  • collection-building
  • visiting authors
  • writing workshop (2009-2012)
  • art workshops (resulting in a group exhibition at Latitude 53 Society of Visual Culture’s Community Gallery (2010)

Edmonton Remand Centre

  • monthly writing workshops in two “bootcamp” units (2015-present)
