About Us

Today, the Greater Edmonton Library Association (GELA) facilitates interaction between librarians, library technicians, library staff, students and other interested parties in Edmonton and surrounding areas.

GELA also promotes continuing education opportunities and assists members in their professional development endeavours.

GELA began as ELA, the Edmonton Library Association.

  • Its first meeting was held January 3, 1945;
  • Constitution developed in 1972;
  • Handbook first created in 1976;
  • The first Logo was created in 1979; and
  • ELA’s first Membership Directory was created in the 1980s, along with
  • A name change to the Greater Edmonton Library Association.
